PERSONALITY:
Remy has a reputation among the X-Men as a lady's man with a 'devil-may-care' attitude. He is a private individual, answering questions about his motives with witty repartee and a grin. He is, in his own words, 'a charming louse'. He is stubborn, devious and underhanded. He is a cheat, a drifter, a thief and a scoundrel. He drinks too much and parties too hard. He is not to be trusted and he will tell people that up front. In his opinion, those are his good points.
While Remy is all those things, he is also compassionate, observant and patient to a fault. He is a logical planner and organized in his work, but can be impulsive in more heated situations. He will jump in to protect those who cannot help themselves, as he was once helped on the streets. He is loyal, though he tries to hide it behind a cold exterior. Life on the streets taught him to never show your hand and never give anybody anything they could use against you. He keeps his emotions locked tightly behind a mask of indifference and confidence.
His abilities haven't let him down yet, so he has the greatest of confidence in them, even overconfident. Ever death that happens around him weighs heavily on his mind and he has never forgotten any face. Not the Morlocks. Not Etienne. Not Genevieve. He feels enormous guilt for what has happened, but does not believe that anybody can know what he did and forgive him. It is this guilt that drives him back to the X-Men time and again. While he cannot atone for what he has done, he will fight to make certain it never happens again.
HISTORY:
Gambit’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Born with red pupils on black eyes, he was presumably abandoned at birth. The baby was stolen by the New Orleans chapter of the Thieves Guild - one of several guilds that traced their ancestry back to a mythical, old kingdom, predating known history. The Thief Guild of New Orleans referred to him as “le diable blanc” – the white devil - and were aware that he was prophesied to play an important part in their future and, strangely, in their past. The child was stolen for the Antiquary, a powerful guild member and historian. Jean-Luc LeBeau, patriarch of the New Orleans Thief Guild, hated the thought of a child having to grow up a slave of the Antiquary, so he made a deal with him (before he was eventually exiled from the Guild), freed the boy and placed him with Fagan’s mob instead – a group of child thieves led by an expatriate guild member named Fagan.
Remy grew up to be a pickpocket. When he was about eight years old, he saw a few men threatening a beautiful blond girl his age and hurried to help her. There was actually no need, as the girl – Bella Donna Boudreaux – was the daughter of the patriarch of the Assassin’s Guild and trained in the killing arts. Bella Donna and Remy would become best friends and eventually fall in love with each other.
Remy tried to rob Jean-Luc LeBeau one day when he was about ten (a meeting that had, no doubt, been orchestrated by Jean-Luc) and was caught. LeBeau adopted the young boy into his own family. As Bella Donna and Remy were in love with each other anyway, their fathers intended to have them marry to ensure lasting pace between the two guilds. The teenagers were reluctant, feeling they were too young, but agreed to marry when they turned eighteen.
Sometime during his teens, Remy’s mutant talent to charge inanimate objects with kinetic energy became active. At the age of fifteen, Remy tried to shepherd his cousin, Etienne, through the tilling, the Thieves' Guild rite of passage. In Spain, Granada, they were captured by the gorgeous but cruel Candra, who mysteriously claimed to have met Remy before. She was buying a shipment of children from the monstrous Pig; and he took Remy and Etienne to his PigPen training facility, intending to sell them to the Viper. Remy, still learning about his own powers, blew their way out of their cells and then blew up the Hydra airship. The Pig caught Etienne and beat on Remy, who picked up a spilled deck of cards and found his motif of throwing charged cards, taking the Pig’s eye out in the process. Both boys fell into the ocean. While Remy was rescued by a fishing trawler, Etienne drowned.
A few months before his arranged marriage, Remy visited Paris with his adoptive brother, Henri. Remy was to earn his place as a member of the Thieves Guild through his own rite of passage. He was to steal a valuable jewel – l’Etoile du Tricherie - from a young jewel thief named Genevieve Darcenaux, who had purloined it from its rightful owner, Herzog. Herzog, in turn, had put Sabretooth on the young woman’s trail. Saving the woman, Remy earned Creed's enmity.
The killer watched as Remy used his wiles to beguile Genevieve, making her fall in love with him and finally stealing the jewel from her. Sabretooth kidnapped both Genevieve and Henri and forced Remy to give him back the jewel and choose between their lives as he dropped both of them from one of the spires of Notre-Dame. Remy chose to save his brother, realizing too late that the dying Genevieve had truly loved him.
On the day of his wedding to Bella Donna, her brother, Julien – who opposed any kind of peace between the Guilds – challenged Remy to a duel. Remy won, apparently killing Julien and, although he had nothing to be guilty of, the Guilds demanded he be banished. Remy departed, not even asking his new wife if she wanted to join him. Gambit left New Orleans. However, a short time later, his control over his growing mutant power was slipping, making him a danger to everyone around him. Help came from an unexpected quarter: the evil scientist, Mr Sinister, performed surgery on Remy’s brain, excising some grey matter, and, in the process, limiting the young man’s power to a controllable level.
Little is known of Gambit’s actions and adventures over the next years, only that he became a superb thief and made many contacts (and quite a few enemies) during that time. He also undertook several missions for Sinister, since he was indebted to him. Eventually, though, Gambit no longer want to serve him and Sinister decided to declare their debt settled after one last mission. He handed Gambit a vial containing his excised grey matter as symbolic payment.
This last mission included collecting a group of superpowered mercenaries (among them a deadly enemy – Sabretooth – and a good friend – Grey Crow aka Scalphunter) and lead them into the tunnel of the subterranean mutant tribe called the Morlocks. Remy was under the mistaken belief that Sinister just wanted to gather knowledge on mutants or capture them. However, he was horrified to learn the truth, as the Marauders started slaughtering all Morlocks upon arriving. Unable to stop the killers, he managed to at least save one little girl named Sarah from them and took her to safety.
Gambit was horrified by the disaster he had wrought and sought to make amends in some way. A few years later, while attempting to separate an art owner in a mansion in Cairo, Illinois from his wealth, he ran into Storm. The X-Men’s leader had, at that point, been reduced to the age of a pre-teen by the mad villain, Nanny. Storm barely had any memories of her life as an X-Man and had returned to her thieving ways. Worse, she was being chased by the Shadow King and his Hounds. Gambit, who had his suspicions about the girl, intervened on Storm’s behalf, making her fight his own. Together, they escaped the Shadow King’s minions. Storm settled in with Gambit in New Orleans and they teamed up as thieves, playing Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.
Eventually, they were found again by Nanny. The confrontation enabled Storm to regain her repressed memories and she left to find the scattered X-Men with an intrigued Gambit in tow. Upon reaching the Xavier estate in Westchester, Storm explained to Gambit why the mansion was in ruins; it had been blown up by one of the X-Men’s foes – Mr. Sinister. Remy sarcastically remarked, “like the name,” as if he never heard of the man before. The pair were met by Banshee and Forge, who had been searching for the missing X-Men, and soon the team was reunited during a crisis in Genosha.
Gambit fought alongside the X-Men, learning as much as he could about them without revealing any details of his own shady past, not even his real name. Only Wolverine had his doubts about the Cajun, which led to a Danger Room duel between them that Gambit easily won (which might have to do with him rigging the fight). When the original X-Men rejoined, Gambit became part of the team.
NOTE: As per Rogue's history, the branching point for Gambit will be after Legion Quest, after the two face one another in Seattle. Since then, Remy has been back and forth about staying with the X-Men. He's recently returned once more and seems ready to settle in for a while. Or, at least, settle in as much as he ever does.
